What is an Aglet?

The little plastic tip at the end of a shoe lace is called an aglet. Most aglets can come as plastic or metal aglets on shoe laces. Aglets make it easy to thread your shoe laces through the eyelets of your sneaker. Many people do not know what the little plastic tip of a shoe lace is, but we are here to help you learn.

Definition of Aglet

1: the plain or ornamental tag covering the ends of a lace or point

2: any of various ornamental studs, cords, or pins worn on clothing

The History of The Aglet

The word aglet comes from the Old French work aguillette which means "needle, pin". It was invented by Harvey Kennedy in 1790. Throughout history the aglet has been very important for things other than shoe laces. Before buttons were invented, aglets were used on ribbons which would be used on clothing. Wealthy people would have their aglets made from precious metals.

The Modern Shoelace and Aglet

Today, shoe laces are commonly made with plastic aglets and made of metal if you're looking for something more premium. Special machines wrap plastic tape around the shoe lace to prevent unravelling, metal aglets are clamped down onto the shoe lace. An Aglet can be customized into pretty much any material and color. Aglets have always been essential but today it can even be used as a fashion statement.
